Simply put, I love social media. Luckily I have the opportunity to do it for a living at Lifesta. We are a very social media driven company (be sure to add us on Facebook and Twitter!). We tweet deals to you, our amazing followers, have fun iPad 2 contests for Facebook fans, and love to interact and engage with you. It’s definitely a powerful tool to connect with fans.
But what is the actual power of social media on an individual basis? It just so happens that one of my friends told me this past week that he doesn’t believe in the power of LinkedIn and other social media sites. So we made a bet (to his dismay). Check out the dialogue below:
- My friend who shall not be named: “Yeah, LinkedIn isn’t that great. It’s a bunch of old people trying to use something that they think is Facebook but less advanced.”
- LifestaLarry: “Oh really?”

- My friend who shall not be named: “Well wanna bet that it isn’t that great everyone thinks it is?”
- LifestaLarry: “Sure, I love bets.”
- My friend who shall not be named: “What you say you make a post on LinkedIn and every comment and message you get on that post you get a dollar from me over a week’s time.”
- LifestaLarry: “OK, sure, good luck to you my friend….”
So, from then on, I decided to run my own experiment on my LinkedIn account last week. I posted this message on LinkedIn:
“I had a bet with one of my friends today. He thinks that using LinkedIn is a waste of time and does not see the benefit. So he has agreed to give me $1 for every like/comment I get. Considering I have over 555 connections I’m sure I can get something out of this! Start liking and commenting on this update people!” Check out the post here.
Let’s just say that in a week’s time and after 3,350 likes, 999 comments, and over 200 profile views per day, my friend most definitely lost his bet. That, my friends, is the power of social media!
