Social Media Gone Wild!

Simply put, I love social media. Luckily I have the opportunity to do it for a living at Lifesta. We are a very social media driven company (be sure to add us on Facebook and Twitter!). We tweet deals to you, our amazing followers, have fun iPad 2 contests for Facebook fans, and love to interact and engage with you. It’s definitely a powerful tool to connect with fans.

But what is the actual power of social media on an individual basis? It just so happens that one of my friends told me this past week that he doesn’t believe in the power of LinkedIn and other social media sites. So we made a bet (to his dismay). Check out the dialogue below:

  • My friend who shall not be named: “Yeah, LinkedIn isn’t that great. It’s a bunch of old people trying to use something that they think is Facebook but less advanced.”
  • LifestaLarry: “Oh really?”
  • My friend who shall not be named: “Well wanna bet that it isn’t that great everyone thinks it is?”
  • LifestaLarry: “Sure, I love bets.”
  • My friend who shall not be named: “What you say you make a post on LinkedIn and every comment and message you get on that post you get a dollar from me over a week’s time.”
  • LifestaLarry: “OK, sure, good luck to you my friend….”

So, from then on, I decided to run my own experiment on my LinkedIn account last week. I posted this message on LinkedIn:

“I had a bet with one of my friends today. He thinks that using LinkedIn is a waste of time and does not see the benefit. So he has agreed to give me $1 for every like/comment I get. Considering I have over 555 connections I’m sure I can get something out of this! Start liking and commenting on this update people!”  Check out the post here.

Let’s just say that in a week’s time and after 3,350 likes, 999 comments, and over 200 profile views per day, my friend most definitely lost his bet. That, my friends, is the power of social media!

Daily Deals in the Summer

It’s my favorite time of the year! The sun is shining, the weather is warm, and that means one thing: its time to get my travel on! I am always looking for a great deal on the go when I am travelling so I can try new things I haven’t tried before and so that I can save money at the same time. As always, I want to share with you tips for summer travel and how you can utilize daily deals in the summer:

  • There has been a lot of buzz about “daily deals in the air”. An article just came out that covers how Gilt Groupe is partnering with Gogo and various airlines for exclusive online and in-air daily deals shopping. Would you use this?
  • I have been trolling Lifesta quite a bit (as one would suspect), and I have come across lots of cool travel deals lately. I am thinking about getting one of the deals and just going without thinking about it! 50% off for a 4-night stay in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico? I’m so there! Groupon Getaways and LivingSocial Escapes are the places I check out for massive savings on trips around the world.
  • Nice hotels are never cheap. Travelocity always has sweet deals available and makes it really easy to book rooms through their website. I think I am going to get this $100 Tippr deal for only $50 to use when I make a reservation.
  • When I travel, I read a lot. I don’t have an iPad 2 (we will find out soon which 3 lucky winners will get one from our giveaway!) but I still like reading physical books on the plane and the beach. Barnes and Noble is my go-to for all things reading related, and check out their awesome Summer Sale now!

I am getting out of my San Francisco routine and going to Los Angeles and San Diego this summer to spend some time in the sun and sand. What are your travel plans this (hopeful) endless summer? How do you save money during this season? Tell us all about it!

Happy Summer,

Larry

Lifesta with Larry – Daily Deal Industry Rundown

WOW! There’s been a lot going on the past few weeks within the world of daily deals. The industry seems to be growing like crazy, and its not just lots of newcomers that are making a splash. We always want to keep you informed about all things daily deals, so check out this rundown:

  • Groupon filed for their IPO, and as response to critic negativity, they released a statement with their ever-so-loveable Spokescat. The response goes to show their playful and goofy culture, but makes it very apparent that they won’t stay mum when there’s criticism.
  • Other services like Loopt are jumping on the daily deal bandwagon and have come up with a creative approach to the market with their new mobile application U-Deal. The idea is to let people using the application request the deal they want. Then, they recruit their friends through Facebook to commit to purchase if the deal get the green light.
  • We posted a few blogs ago about daily deal niche sites, but EVEN MORE have popped up since then! Some interesting new ones are: ExoticDeals for adults, the DailyHookup for gay men, and FurryBoo for your favorite pet! What on earth will they think of next?!

This whole world of daily deals sure is exciting, and I love being part of it through Lifesta! There are many different facets to the industry and I am excited to see what happens next. What are your thoughts? What has caught your attention with all of this news? Sound off in our comments section!

Daily Deals for Dudes

It’s almost daily when I visit Groupon or LivingSocial I am instantly disappointed because the deals are always yoga classes, bikini waxes, or manicures. None of these apply to me (and Mr. T, the proclaimed toughest Man in the World surely won’t use these deals)! Since I am always on the hunt for a good deal, through my search I have found some awesome daily deals sites that I use geared towards guys…

    • Thrillist is a site that finds the best of what’s new in your ‘hood & on the web. From the best pubs in my area to deals on sports gear, I am sure to find something I actually need on Thrillist. This site is great because they are not going to waste their time or mine with deals that “suck.” Win! UrbanDaddy is another great site similar to Thrillist with deals on the best nightlife events.
    • JackThreads is a site for guy brand named fashion at half the price. It’s members only and deals go quick! Their previous deals have included Penguin and Lacoste. Good stuff!
    • Another good one is Dealometry. It is their mission to deliver awesome deals for men – “no manicures, waxings or yoga classes. Just the best deals on stuff that guys love.” The site is still growing, and I am excited to see what other deals they will continue to have. I got a pair of tan Chuck Taylor’s for $20 through Dealometry and love em!

What other deal sites for dudes do you love? Post a comment and let us know! Also check out our previous blog post on other niche daily deal sites, and visit Lifesta.com for the most updated deals near you!
